In the domain of Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST), the BEYOND Centre for Earth Observation and Satellite Remote Sensing plays a pivotal role as Greece’s National Operations Center (GR-NOC SST) and a key contributor to the European SST Partnership. Its mission encompasses the detection, tracking, cataloguing, and characterization of artificial objects in Earth’s orbit—ranging from active satellites and rocket bodies to defunct spacecraft and space debris—enabling real-time orbital environment monitoring.
GR-NOC SST oversees activities that involve, but are not limited to:
- Coordinating Greek sensors for conducting space surveillance observations
- Processing observational data in accordance with EUSST specifications
- Correlating observations with known objects in space catalogs and contributing them to the EUSST database
As part of the Greek participation in the EUSST Partnership, GR-NOC actively supports the main EUSST services in collaboration with the operational centers of other EU member states. The main EUSST services are:
- Collision Avoidance (CA)
- Re-entry analysis (RE)
- Fragmentation Analysis (FG)
BEYOND is deeply engaged in international collaborations and applies cutting-edge artificial intelligence methodologies to further improve SST services. Aligned with European space policy and defense objectives, the Centre not only protects strategic national and European interests but also fosters innovation, drives economic development, and cultivates a skilled and resilient space workforce. Through these efforts, BEYOND stands as a cornerstone of Europe’s commitment to ensuring safe, secure, and autonomous operations in the increasingly complex space domain.
