A major challenge in climate modelling is the accurate representation of cloud radiative effects with cloud feedback being the largest source of uncertainty in climate projections. The high uncertainty in estimating the cloud radiative effects on climate lies on the difficulties in reconstructing 3D cloud field representations, and providing accurate descriptions of their optical properties, along with performing the radiative transfer (RT) calculations of these complicated scenes. Obs3RvE (Optimising 3D RT Earthcare product using geostationary observations and AI) proposes an innovative approach towards more accurate quantification of the cloud radiative impact on climate, utilising the observations of the Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) and Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) missions, and artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The results of Obs3RvE will also aim to assess the cloud effects on solar energy applications, extending the contribution of the EarthCARE mission well beyond its primary scientific goals.
