The MedFireWise project, coordinated by the BEYOND Centre of the National Observatory of Athens, was recently featured in the national newspaper TA NEA, in an article written by journalist Ifigeneia Virvidaki.
The article focuses on how the Mediterranean region is increasingly vulnerable to extreme wildfire events and how projects like MedFireWise are working to turn this challenge into an opportunity for cooperation and innovation.
“MedFireWise, coordinated by the BEYOND Centre of the National Observatory of Athens, brings together seven Mediterranean countries to exchange experiences and promote prevention practices that are both effective and sustainable.”
As described in the article, the project’s goal is to study and apply traditional practices, such as prescribed burning and silvopasture, within a scientific framework to help reduce the accumulation of flammable biomass and prevent large-scale fires. These methods, which have been part of Mediterranean culture for centuries, are being revisited as Nature-Based Solutions — practical, low-cost, and environmentally friendly approaches to risk reduction.
“By studying nature and applying old practices that are rooted in it, we can find effective and lasting answers to wildfires.”
The feature also underlines that MedFireWise aims to strengthen collaboration among Mediterranean countries, fostering a common approach to wildfire prevention adapted to local landscapes and social realities.
