geo 20 6 2025

An in-person meeting held on May 6, 2025, during the GEO Global Forum in Rome, brought together 27 participants from across the GEO Working Groups (WGs), other GEO Work Programme (GWP) activities, and the wider GEO community to discuss and flesh out details for a potential GEO joint Working Group activity on the Climate-Biodiversity-Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) nexus under the post-2025 GWP enhancing linkage towards Earth intelligence.

Key ideas explored:

  • Creating a cross-GEO inventory of essential/shared variables
  • Establishing formal liaison mechanisms within WGs
  • Connecting to GEO Knowledge Hub
  • Leveraging Regional GEO events and thematic work

Through his participation in this meeting, Haris Kontoes, Research Director at IAASARS/NOA, acting as EuroGEO Action Groups Coordinator and Principal Investigator of the GEO-CRADLE GEO Enabling Mechanism, emphasized the importance of coordination and highlighted that EuroGEO -Europe’s regional GEO- has carried out an extensive thematic work via its established Action Groups on climate, biodiversity, and disaster resilience accumulating valuable knowledge and experience that could significantly contribute to the ongoing GEO Working Groups coordination efforts.
