Alexia Tsouni, Stavroula Sigourou and Vassiliki Pagana, Research Associates from the FloodHub team of the Operational Unit “BEYOND Centre of Earth Observation Research and Satellite Remote Sensing”, Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics Space Applications and Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of Athens, conducted a 2-day training workshop for the flood team of the ERATOSTHENES Center of Excellence in Limassol, Cyprus, on the 18th of September, in the framework of the EXCELSIOR Teaming project. The training workshop aimed at introducing the holistic multi-parameter flood risk assessment and management planning at high spatial resolution (building block level) to support public actors and stakeholders in decision-making and flood management. The case study was the Mandra river basin in Attica, Greece.
In particular, the workshop’s program included:
• Hydrological simulations for three flood scenarios (T 50, 100, 1000 years)
• Hydraulic simulations for three flood scenarios (T 50, 100, 1000 years)
• Flood vulnerability assessment
• Flood exposure assessment
• Flood risk assessment
• Critical points mapping
A special focus was set on the proposal of mitigation measures for the worst-case scenario, including definition of refuge areas and design of escape routes, following a multi-criteria analysis.
The workshop gained the interest of the ERATOSTHENES Center of Excellence members that had a special interested in flood risk assessment.
