Location: National Observatory of Athens, Greece

Overview:

The Operational Unit BEYOND Center for Earth Observation Research and Satellite Remote Sensing at the National Observatory of Athens is seeking three highly skilled and motivated Research Data Scientists to join our team and contribute to cutting-edge applied research at the intersection of Earth Observation and Artificial Intelligence. We have three distinct positions available, each focusing on different expertise areas to address various environmental challenges:

  1. Deep Learning Research Data Scientist
  2. Causality Research Data Scientist
  3. Environmental Data Scientist

Common Responsibilities and Qualifications for All Positions:

Responsibilities:

  • Earth Observation Data Processing: Process and fuse heterogeneous earth observation and satellite remote sensing data to generate meaningful feature spaces for AI modelling and learning.
  • Paper Writing: Prepare research papers and contribute to the dissemination of findings.
  • Participation in European Projects: Contribute to proposal writing, project realization, and deliverable preparation.
  • Travelling: Occasional travel for project meetings, presentations, and collaboration.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or higher in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Environmental Sciences, or a related field with a focus on Earth Observation data analysis and AI applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying machine learning, statistical modeling, and data analysis techniques to complex datasets.
  • Proficiency in Python or R.
  • Knowledge of remote sensing data processing techniques and familiarity with Earth Observation data formats (e.g., NetCDF, GeoTIFF) is a plus.
  • Proven track record of scientific publications in relevant fields is a bonus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, analytical mindset and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • English language proficiency preferably at C2 level, both written and spoken.

Additional Expertise for Each Position:

For Research Data Scientist (Deep Learning):

  • Deep Learning Model Development: Research, design, and implement deep learning models for analyzing large-scale Earth Observation datasets. Develop and optimize deep neural networks for tasks such as image classification, object detection, semantic segmentation, and time-series analysis.
  • Proficiency in deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) and geospatial data.

For Research Data Scientist (Causality):

  • Earth Observation Data Analysis: Utilize remote sensing data from satellites and other sources to extract meaningful insights about various environmental phenomena, including but not limited to agriculture, ecosystems, biodiversity, and climate patterns.
  • Causal Inference and Discovery: Develop methodologies for causal inference and discovery in complex environmental systems, aiming to understand cause-and-effect relationships to inform evidence-based decision-making.
  • AI and Machine Learning Development: Apply advanced machine learning techniques, including predictive modeling and clustering, to analyze large-scale Earth Observation datasets and develop AI-based solutions for environmental research.

For Environmental Data Scientist:

  • Sustainable Agriculture Research: Explore the integration of AI technologies in optimising sustainable agricultural practices for healthy ecosystems.
  • Climate Change Impact Assessment: Investigate the impact of climate change on natural ecosystems, identifying patterns, and trends using Earth Observation data to aid in the development of climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
