About the Project

Risk and Recovery Mapping provides on-demand geospatial information in support of Disaster Management activities not related to immediate response. This applies in particular to activities dealing with prevention, preparedness, disaster risk reduction and recovery phases. There are three broad product categories: Reference Maps, Pre-disaster Situation Maps and Post-disaster Situation Maps.

The users of the service include entities and organisations at regional, national, European and international level active in the field of emergency management. The EMS can be triggered only by or through an Authorised User (AU). Authorised Users include National Focal Points (NFPs) in the EU Member States and countries participating in the Copernicus programme, as well as European Commission services and the European External Action Service (EEAS).

CEMS supports crisis managers, civil protection and hydrometeorological authorities, humanitarian aid actors dealing with natural disasters, man-made emergency situations, and humanitarian crises, as well as those involved in recovery, disaster risk reduction and preparedness activities. As an EU service, the CEMS’s first priority is responding to EU needs.

List of EMS Risk and Recovery Mapping Activations

EMSN206 - Wildfire delineation and grading in Hungary

The aim of the activation was to support the Hungarian authorities (Central Duty Service, National Directorate General for Disaster Management) in the fire investigation to assess the burnt area, and plan the recovery of the affected area after the vegetation fire between September 5 and September 9, 2024 that occurred in the northern part of the town Celldömölk in Vas County, at West Hungary.

EMSN205 - Retrospective flood temporal analysis in Saarland, Germany

The aim of this activation is to provide the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) of Germany with an assessment of the flood temporal analysis via modelling over Saarland region in Germany after a flood event that occurred on May 17 2024.

EMSN200 - Wildfire delineation and grading in East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece

The aim of this activation was to provide detailed information at the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of Greece of the wildfire’s impact, spatial distribution, and extent that occurred on Falakro mountain between July 17th and July 23rd 2024, for the recovery and restoration planning of the affected area.

EMSN197 - Ground deformation monitoring in Azores

The aim of this activation is to employ SAR Interferometry, to asses ground displacements in Terceira Island and provide to the SRPCBA, valuable insights on the deformation trends in the AOI, following the years after the Copernicus European Ground Motion Service (EGMS, https://egms.land.copernicus.eu/) analysis until 2022.

EMSN196 - Drought and surface water monitoring in Zambia’s Central and Southern Provinces

The aim of this activation was to provide scientific evidence of successful integrated watershed management (IWsM)/groundwater harvesting measures in Zambia, using remote sensing data and GIS analysis. hese insights aim to enhance planning and facilitate joint decision-making by relevant ministries, substantiating the importance of scaling up the AWARE 2.0 project's approaches through government extension services

EMSN190 - Flood risk assessment in Bujumbura, Burundi

The aim of this activation was to deliver flood hazard assessment information for Bujumbura, Burundi, based on various scenarios of water-level rise of Lake Tanganyika. This included analysis based on current forecasts and two medium-level hazard scenarios, as well as critical infrastructure exposure assessment.
