BEYOND/NOA's strategic contributions featured at the EuroGEO Workshop 2024 in Krakow, Poland, 8-10/10/2024
Over three dynamic days in Krakow, Poland, the EuroGEO Workshop 2024 (8-10 October 2024) brought together a vibrant community of Earth Observation experts, policymakers & stakeholders from across Europe & beyond bridging the gap between research, policy, and market.
With a packed agenda of presentations, in-depth discussions & networking sessions, the event fostered collaboration and knowledge-sharing around critical global challenges.
BEYOND EO Centre NOA played a prominent role in the Workshop, contributing to 7️⃣ sessions & 2️⃣ Side Events, showcasing innovative research, and driving discussions on key themes.
Some highlights include:
✔️Thematic Day Introductory Session: Charalampos (Haris) Kontoes, Research Director of NOA and Scientific Director of the BEYOND EO Centre NOA set the tone for the day with insightful remarks, framing the discussions around key thematic issues in the Earth Observation sector.
✔️Disasters and Health Action Groups: Charalampos (Haris) Kontoes, Alexia Tsouni, and Mariza Kaskara, our Research Associates led impactful sessions, discussing the latest advancements and collaborations in using Earth Observation for disaster management and public health applications.
✔️Synergies through GEO Focus Areas:
👉Weather, Hazard & Disaster Resilience: Alexia Tsouni chaired this session, steering the conversation towards improving resilience to natural hazards through cutting-edge Earth Observation technologies.
👉One Health: Mariza Kaskara led the session as Chair, exploring how Earth Observation can support integrated approaches to human, animal, and environmental health under the One Health framework.
✔️EuroGEO & Regional GEOs Collaboration and Synergies
Haris Kontoes co-chaired the pivotal session on EuroGEO’s collaboration with Regional GEOs, presenting innovative ways to leverage the GEO-CRADLE and e-shape legacies. His presentation emphasized on EuroGEO’s partnerships with Regional GEOs in Africa and the Pacific, focusing on Earth Observation maturity assessments and capacity development initiatives that are transforming regional decision-making capabilities.
Side Events
✔️SDGEyes Policy Workshop: In this high-level policy session, Haris Kontoes participated as a panelist, sharing insights on the role of EO in advancing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on strengthening policy frameworks.
✔️GEO Initiative GEO-CRADLE Program: Haris Kontoes chaired this side event, with contributions from Alexia Tsouni and Mariza Kaskara as panelists. The session highlighted the enduring legacy of GEO-CRADLE.
