BEYOND Center of Excellence
The BEYOND Center of Excellence for Earth Observation Research and Satellite Remote Sensing is an operational unit of the National Observatory of Athens (ΝΟΑ) belong to the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of Athens. It develops state-of-the-art research and innovative services for the containment of disaster risks, triggered either by natural or man-made causes in the wider region of Southeast Europe, the Balkans, the Middle East and North Africa, by utilizing large satellite data acquisition antennas located at NOA premises. Its aim is to provide timely information to relevant disaster management and emergency management authorities and stakeholders, and, by utilizing space technology, to aid them in decision making for civil protection measures across the entire spectrum of crisis management.
Through its participation in flagship European programs, the Center has also provided cross sector research and services in a number of crucial domains of economic development such as Food Security, exploitation of Renewable Energy resources, Climate Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Change, Health services, and Cultural Heritage preservation using satellite technology.
BEYOND is operating on behalf of ESA several Copernicus Sentinel Hubs, providing to the global community access to petabytes of satellite data and products. To this end, BEYOND has consolidated expertise in big satellite data management, processing and analysis, relying on Data Cubes technologies, Deep Learning and big data analytics technologies.
